The Experts Pushing the Envelope

Boston Metal is bringing specialists to the table to overcome challenges and pioneer innovation. Our team is made up of world-class scientists and metals industry veterans with deep technical expertise in metallurgy, electrochemistry, materials science, process engineering, systems modeling, thermodynamics and more.

Get to know the wealth of technical expertise driving innovation at Boston Metal.

Hear from Weijia Zhang, Director of Advanced Automation & Systems, about the work that goes into the software and hardware of our technology, the caliber of the Boston Metal team and how together, we’re going to change the world.

Alojz Kajinic, PhD

Principal Alloy Development Engineer

Alojz is an expert in alloy development, process metallurgy and computational thermodynamics and thermochemistry. Metals and advanced alloys quite literally underpin modern civilization. From jet engines and rockets to electric vehicles, metallurgy is quietly everywhere – and that’s what makes it endlessly fascinating for Alojz.

“We’re designing alloys and electrochemical processes that make cleaner, low-emission metals production possible, proving that metallurgy isn’t just about melting metals, but also about moving the world forward.”

Xin Zhang, PhD

Principal Refractory Engineer

Xin joined Boston Metal in 2024 with over 15 years of experience working for steel manufacturers such as ArcelorMittal, one of our investors, and Cleveland-Cliffs. Throughout her career, Xin has gained a wide range of experience in refractory development and is now pioneering the field to improve the production safety and efficiency of our Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology.

“In Chinese, there is a saying ‘The fire burns high when everyone adds wood to it.’ Everyone is able to contribute their own expertise, and together, we are able to build a new era of green technology.”

Learn more about how our Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology scaled up from producing grams of metal in an MIT lab to now producing tons of metal at our pilot plant. The Boston Metal team has scaled up, too – developing extensive technical expertise and collaborating with our Brazilian colleagues to transform how metals are made.

Rishi Agarwal, PhD

Senior Process Development & Engineering Manager

Rishi began his career at Boston Metal as an electrochemical scientist working on electrolyte development. He has since taken on the role of technical lead on our pilot scale Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) cells, overseeing the development of the commercial process for our technology.

“Steel is used to build almost everything. We have to develop a process that is simple and accessible in order to operate on a scale that can make a real impact.”

Frederik Brasz, PhD

Director of Modeling

Frederik is an expert in computational modeling with a focus on fluid mechanics and heat transfer. As Boston Metal’s newly appointed Director of Modeling, he brings years of experience in theoretical and practical applications of physics.

“To make the technology work, we have to understand it. Being able to model and analyze our process is crucial to actually developing something we can scale at a competitive cost.”

Brent Thompson

Senior Advisory Engineer

After over 40 years of hands-on powdered metallurgy experience, Brent is applying his knowledge to Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) alloy development and ensuring our Operations team has the support they need to bring our MOE technology to scale.

“The work we are doing in alloy development is something that has never been done before and it can potentially decarbonize steelmaking. In our world today, this is incredibly important, and the innovation is exciting from both a scientific and environmental standpoint.”
