Making Massachusetts a Center for Climate Innovation: Mass Governor and State Officials Visit Boston Metal

Features Published: April 17, 2024

Last week, Boston Metal had the honor and privilege of welcoming Governor Maura Healey along with other Massachusetts government officials and special guests to our Woburn facility as part of the Governor’s Mass Leads Act Road Show. The visit included conversations around the ways Governor Healey’s recently proposed economic development bill will grow the Massachusetts economy, support businesses and attract talent, while putting a spotlight on the work Boston Metal is doing to shape the next chapter in American steel manufacturing.

The group toured our Woburn facility, witnessed a demonstration of green steel in the making and heard remarks from Governor Healey herself, our CEO Tadeu Carneiro, Woburn Mayor Mike Concannon, Economic Development Secretary Yvonne Hao and CEO & Managing Partner of Engine Ventures Katie Rae. We were fortunate to also host Energy & Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper, MassCEC CEO Emily Reichert, Massachusetts State Representatives Michelle Ciccolo and Richard Haggerty, members of the Woburn City Council and other special guests.

“We are so lucky to have Boston Metal here in Massachusetts. I mean, this is climate technology that is going to change the world, and it’s so exciting to know that Massachusetts, where steel was first manufactured in this country back in 1640, is now being manufactured again.”

– Governor Healey

“This is a perfect example of what we do in Massachusetts. We solve really big, hard problems using the latest innovation and technology. And we do it for good,” added Economic Development Secretary Yvonne Hao.

The commercial development of our green steel technology is happening today in Massachusetts, and we are excited to say that, by the end of 2024, we will commission an industrial cell in Woburn that will establish our path to commercializing Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) for green steel in 2026.

“We are proud to be a part of the climate tech innovation ecosystem in Massachusetts and look forward to exploring how the state can support the success of this next phase in Boston Metal’s journey to revolutionize steel production,” shared our CEO, Tadeu Carneiro.
