Boston Metal featured in climate tech docuseries with Bill Gates

Features Published: April 13, 2022

We’re excited to be included in “Solving for Zero: The Search for Climate Innovation”, a 10-part documentary series that premieres on April 15th. Featuring Bill Gates and experts from a variety of different fields, the series highlights the tangible solutions we already have or that are on the way to reach net-zero emissions, including our technology that is showcased as a promising green steel solution. The series is inspired by Bill Gates’ best-selling book “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster”, and streams on Wondrium, a global subscription video-on-demand service.

Each episode covers distinct topics such as carbon capture, power generation, transportation, agriculture, building materials, and manufacturing. Boston Metal is included in the 4th episode, “How We Make Things”, which focuses on how our society can build greener infrastructure through technological innovations. The episode features interviews with our CEO Tadeu Carneiro and plant engineering manager Kara Gibson discussing the challenges of achieving green steel and why Boston Metal’s molten oxide electrolysis technology is poised to transform metal production around the world.

Elevating the importance of green infrastructure is critical in efforts to tackle the climate crisis, as the steel industry alone accounts for ~8% of the world’s carbon emissions. Steel impacts almost every part of society, from the buildings we work and live in to the materials used to construct vehicles and wind turbines. There is no lack of green steel demand, and it’s certainly a complicated problem to solve, but at Boston Metal, we’ve been making significant headway. Once Boston Metal reaches commercialization in the second half of the decade, we anticipate the application and the adoption of our technology will be swift. In the sector where it has been historically difficult to reduce emissions, green steel can have a substantial impact on our efforts to reach net zero by 2050
