Boston Metal and Outokumpu Announce Collaboration to Unlock the Future of Efficient Metals Production
Eliminating carbon emissions from metals production is one of the biggest industrial challenges—and opportunities—of our time. At Boston Metal, we believe strategic collaborations are essential to transitioning to a zero-carbon pathway, applying our proprietary Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology in new contexts and building the foundation for a more sustainable metals industry.
That’s why we are excited to announce a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Outokumpu, a global leader in sustainable stainless steel. Together, we are exploring how MOE can enhance stainless steel production, improve circularity and strengthen critical metals supply chains.
New Opportunities for MOE in Stainless Steel
Through this collaboration, Boston Metal will test and evaluate the use of MOE to process side streams from Outokumpu’s operations. These byproducts, which are typically difficult to reuse, have the potential to become valuable inputs through MOE’s unique process. The result is a more circular approach to stainless steel production that reduces waste while boosting efficiency.
“By working with industry leader Outokumpu to explore multiple possibilities involving the chromium metal supply chain, Boston Metal will be better positioned to deliver a sustainable and profitable pathway to unlock new economic opportunities across the metals industry. We welcome the opportunity to deploy our MOE technology to help bring value to Outokumpu’s operations and advance sustainable metals production.”
– Adam Rauwerdink, SVP of Business Development at Boston Metal
In parallel, Outokumpu will provide chrome-oxide and chromium feedstock from its Kemi mine in Finland. These materials are vital for Boston Metal’s inert anode, the enabling component that makes MOE scalable for green steel. This supply agreement strengthens a critical part of our value chain.
For Outokumpu, the collaboration supports its broader technology roadmap and sustainability goals, while providing a platform to test MOE on stainless steel side streams. By aligning efforts, both companies are showing how innovation and industry leadership accelerate progress toward carbon-free metals.
Momentum at a Critical Time
The MoU builds on Boston Metal’s current momentum as we commission our first commercial facility in Brazil to produce high-value critical metals such as niobium and tantalum. That project underscores how MOE can scale from research to industrial production. Working with Outokumpu now broadens that impact—showing how MOE can complement established stainless steel operations and open new pathways for cleaner, more circular metals production.
This collaboration also highlights MOE’s adaptability: from high-value critical metals to large-scale steelmaking, and now to stainless steel, the technology is proving its ability to address multiple challenges across the metals sector.
A Step Toward the Future of Metals
Metals production remains one of the largest contributors to global carbon emissions. Addressing that challenge requires not just breakthrough technology but also alignment between innovators and established industry leaders.
By working together, Boston Metal and Outokumpu are taking a meaningful step toward metals production that is carbon emissions-free, with the potential to create lasting value across the metals ecosystem. For Boston Metal, this collaboration is a milestone on our journey to reshape the future of metals.
