Collaborating for a More Sustainable Metals Industry

Boston Metal was pleased to receive the governor of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, and several of his secretaries and agency representatives together with Massachusetts’ Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao and Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Healey, Marconi Almeida-Barros, at our facility in Woburn, Massachusetts. Reynaldo Passanezi, president of CEMIG, the Minas Gerais electric utility, also joined the Brazilian delegation.

During the visit, Governor Zema signed a proclamation in support of a cooperation agreement between Boston Metal and the Minas Gerais state government. Signatories of the agreement included Secretary of Economic Development of the State of Minas Gerais Fernando Passalio; João Paulo Braga, president of Invest Minas; Tadeu Carneiro, CEO of Boston Metal; and Itamar Resende, president of Boston Metal do Brasil. The cooperation agreement formalizes the support of Governor Zema’s administration for our Brazilian subsidiary, Boston Metal do Brasil, in its implementation of our Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology to recover high-value metals from mining waste in the state of Minas Gerais.

Both delegations participated in a tour of our Woburn facility led by our chief scientist, Guillaume Lambotte. Following the tour, Secretary Hao expressed her admiration for our work scaling up a breakthrough technology platform that in addition to recovering value from mining waste, has significant potential to decarbonize primary steelmaking. She cited Boston Metal as one of several enterprises in Massachusetts that are on the cutting edge of climate tech.

We look forward to building on these critical relationships to further expand both our high-value metals business and green steel solution. We greatly appreciate Governor Zema and the entire Minas Gerais delegation and the Massachusetts officials for their meaningful support of our work to transform metals production.
